Subject librarian responsibilities :
- Develop library collection and subject resources to support learning needs and increase quality research output.
- Develop and conduct information literacy training and subject tutorials to help students become proficient information seekers and users.
- Provide consultation, reference and advisory services on information searching and resources.
Operational Responsibilities :
- Responsible for the management and development of Business Library operations and collections so that the information needs of academic staff and students are well supported with quality resources, user-centred services and facilities.
- Strategize, plan and coordinate outreach activities for the Business Library so that users are more aware of library services and resources.
Work Experience :
Akbar received his BAcc degree from NUS in 1986 and joined NTI (renamed NTU in 1991) as a trainee librarian in December of that year. He obtained his MA (Librarianship) from the University of Sheffield in 1988 with a scholarship from NTI.
Akbar has held various positions in NTU Libraries since then. He started in 1989 as Coordinator, Commerce Resource and became Head, Resource 2 in 1995, building up the accountancy and business collection as well as pioneering information literacy programmes and providing library research consultation to business students.
In 1999, he was appointed Instructional & Research Support Librarian and in 2005, headed the newly created Instructional Services Division. A year after setting up this division, he moved on in 2006 as Head, Business Cluster and subsequently as Head of the newly set up Business Library in 2009, a position he currently holds. Akbar is also Business Librarian for Hospitality Management.
