Let’s speak Malay!

Helped by members of the NTU Malay Language and Cultural Society, a group of international students picked up Malay at an ISC Coffee Session to better interact with Malay-speaking Singaporeans and others in the region.

From L to R: Shou Heng, an EEE student from China; Satoshi, an MBA student from Japan; and Nabilah, a Singaporean and English student at HSS.

In the afternoon of 25 February 2009, Singaporean and HSS student Nabilah put aside her notes on Shakespeare and African Literature to teach conversational Malay to international students at NTU. Two participants who benefited from her coaching were Shou Heng, a Chinese student pursuing a PhD in EEE, and Satoshi, a Japanese student on the NTU-Waseda Double MBA in the Management of Technology programme.

Says Shou Heng: “I would like to try speaking Malay after this workshop and even bargaining in the language when I holiday in Malaysia in May with my friends. Adds Satoshi: “Knowing how to express greetings and social pleasantries in Malay will come in useful in making new friends and when I travel in the region. Terima Kasih!”
