The School of Athens by Raphael depicts the famous Academy - so was the name of a grove near Athens, purchased by Plato in 387 B.C.E., where the great Greek philosopher founded his school. Since then the word ACADEMY is associated with PHILOSOPHY (the love of wisdom) and SCIENCE (a brave quest for Truth). The word PHILOSOPHY was coined by Phythagoras, the founder of a mystic order with an inner circle of followers known as mathematikoi (mathematicians). The mathematikoi lived permanently with the Society, had no personal possessions and were vegetarians. It is believed that Raphael's painting depicts Leonardo da Vinci - Raphael's teacher - as Plato.
