NMR microspectroscopy using microprobe chips (July'11 – June'14):
Role in project: Collaborator
Principal Investigator: A/P POENAR DANIEL PUIU
Project Description: This project is fundamentally related to the needs of miniaturization of NMR equipment. The project proposes to design, fabricate and test an original NMR micro-probe that would generate both the constant magnetic field and the excitation RF signal(s), and also perform the necessary read-out of the response induced in the sample by the latter. The initial targeted application is performing "in-cell" NMR microspectroscopic analysis of protein complexes. If the results will be encouraging, we shall subsequently extend the approach for investigation of tissues on larger areas.
Microwave Signal Processing Using Photonic Techniques (Aug'09 – June'12):
Role in project: Principal Investigator
Project Description:
Recognizing that the conventional RF signal processing techniques have several disadvantages such as limited bandwidth and electromagnetic interference (EMI), processing of RF signals in the optical domain is proposed to overcome these limitations. This concept also offers great flexibility in selecting the RF frequency of operation, RF bandwidth, and the filter response. The outcome from this research work will lead to development of high performance multi-tap microwave photonic filters (MPF) which have a high main to secondary sidelobe ratio (MSSR) and tunable filter response; this combination has very significant impact on microwave signal processing techniques for various applications.
Optical processing of microwave signals using differential group delay elements, chirped fiber Bragg gratings, and nonlinear effects in fiber (July'06 – June'09):
Role in project: Principal Investigator
The project team has developed/studied
- Tunable microwave filters using differential group delay (DGD) elements such as Hi-Bi fiber and Hi-Bi chirped grating
- Tunable microwave filters with switchable single and dual free spectral range (FSR) using Sagnac loop and chirped fiber Bragg gratings
- Tunable microwave photonic filters using high-order polarization mode dispersion emulator
- Multi-wavelength power equalized laser
- Multi-tap microwave photonic filter using multi-wavelength fiber laser
- Widely tunable microwave filter based on stimulated Brillion scattering
- Nonlinearity in RF filters using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)
Design of UWB antennas and transmitter front-end circuits (Oct.'04-March'05):
Role in project: Principal Investigator
This project was done in collaboration with IME.
- As a part of ongoing activity at IME, a fully integrated pulse generator and driver amplifier (power gain 20 dB, bandwidth 4.5 GHz) were developed.
- At NTU, two types of printed antennas were developed, covering the frequency range 3.1-10.6 GHz. For these antennas transfer functions were determined, enabling one to predict accurately the time domain performance of the antennas. An equivalent circuit model for one of the printed antennas was also developed.
- A project entitled 'Localization and identification: System architectural components and core capability development for ultra-wideband enabled sentient computing' has recently been approved by A*STAR, Singapore.
Microwave and millimeter-wave MEMS for automatic identification and tracking (1999-2003):
Role in project: Collaborator
Principal Investigator: Dr. Law Choi Look
- A prototype 2.45 GHz active back scattering RFID tag, reader and software; tag range of up to 20 meters.
- Design, implementation and testing of many different types of antennas operating at 2.45 GHz, 5.8 GHz and 24 GHz. Micromachined versions of some of these antennas (with cavity) were also designed and fabricated. A slot fed patch micromachined antenna at 24 GHz on Silicon wafer exhibited 7dBi gain and 6% bandwidth.
- Design, implementation and testing of many different types of filters operating at 2.45 GHz, 5.8 GHz and 24 GHz. 24 GHz filters using micromachined transmission lines were designed and fabricated on both GaAs and HR Silicon; simulated passband insertion loss of the filter was 2 dB.
- Design and fabrication of shunt capacitive RF MEMS switch and multi-band antenna.
Development of integrated optic power splitters using ion exchange glass waveguides (1995-98):
Role in project: Principal investigator
- S bends: Modification in the well known designs of S bends has been suggested for use in Y junction based power splitters.
- Fiber Array Blocks: Using silicon V grooved wafers, a method for preparing fiber array blocks (FABs) for pig-tailing with multiple single mode fibers has been developed; patent 'Method of manufacturing a fiber array block for integrated optics circuits and products thereof' granted in June 2005 in India.
- Ion Exchange Glass Waveguides: Based on thermal K+ ion-exchange process, technology has been developed for fabrication of low-loss channel waveguides on glass substrates. Design tools have been developed for (a) analysis and design of ion-exchange waveguides and Y-junction power splitters, (b) generating data for e-beam mask, and (c) optimizing the ion-exchange process.
Development of measurement techniques using microwave open resonators (1984-88):
Role in project: Principal Investigator
I and my co-workers developed a technique for accurate and fast measurement of high quality factors which are typically exhibited by microwave open resonators. This technique was used for accurate measurement of dielectric constant of materials and for measurement of extinction cross section of falling water drops at X band.
During a visiting assignment at FAMU/FSU College of Engineering, Florida, I participated in developing a new type of millimeter wave open resonator for cryogenic testing of high critical temperature superconducting materials.
Microwave troposcatter communication link (1980-85):
Role in project: Principal Investigator
Principal Investigator: Prof. R. K. Arora
I participated in establishing, between IIT Delhi and CEERI Pilani, an experimental troposcatter communication link operating in the frequency range 4.4 5.0 GHz. This link was used for carrying out research studies and for training of students.
Meander line ferrite phase shifter (1974-78):
Role in project: Collaborator
Developed a ferrite microstrip meander line phase shifter at X band for the
first time in India. This work included planning and commissioning a small MIC laboratory with indigenously developed equipment. In addition, during a six month visit to Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, I also participated in the development of a high power ferrite dielectric phase shifter.
