My project focuses on Evolvable Fuzzy Hardware (EFH) system, which is a combination of evolvable system and fuzzy system. Evolutionary computation is employed to search good fuzzy rule sets, membership functions and so on for the fuzzy system. According to the evolved fuzzy rule sets, the hardware architecture of the fuzzy inference can be reconfigured. Thus the system can be called EFH. Due to the very coarse evolution granularity compared with transistor level EHW, gate level EHW, and functional level EHW, its computation complexity can be much smaller and the whole system is more likely to be employed in real-time applications to accommodate intrinsic evolution and on-line adaptation. One of its real-time application is packet switching problem in modern networks such ATM, MPLS and so on. Due to the unpredictable network conditions, the cell flow patterns may change dramatically. Although the existing conventional scheduling system may deliver perfect performance for specific traffic scenarios, it might suffer huge degradations if the cell flow patterns change much or keep dramatic changing. According to their fixed control scheme, existing scheduling systems may not keep consistent system performance when the scenario is changing. The EFH system with the intrinsic evolutionary and on-line adaptive scheme can trace the changes of cell flow patterns and keep desired QoS performance under different cell flow scenarios. Another very inspiring characteristic of EFH is that the QoS component such as cell delay or cell loss can be tuned very conveniently according to the desired performance. The whole system of EFH will be implemented on a chip including the evolution part and evaluation part. Our future real-time application of EFH will be carried out on the Speech Signal Processing, Video Image Processing and so on.
