NTU EEE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AGM 2001

PRESIDENT’S REPORT FOR THE YEAR 2000/2001

  1. Introduction
The Nanyang Technological University School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering Alumni Association, which was officially registered on the 3 Dec 96, has gone into its fifth year.

  2. Executive Committee
There were a total of 9 executive committee members and they are:

  3. President - Mr Inderjit Singh

Vice President - Mr Heng Guan Teck

Hon Secretary - Mr Alagappan Murugappan

Asst Hon Secretary - Mr Heng Aik Swan

Hon Treasurer - Dr Ponnuthurai N Suganthan

Asst Hon Treasurer - Mr Choo Yock Meng

Committee Members - Mr Anthony Ho, Mr Allan Ng, Dr Lee Peng Hin.

The patrons for the Association are Prof Er Meng Hwa and Prof Brian Lee.

  4. Accounts for FY 2000/2001
Our financial year was from June 2000 to May 2001. We have thus closed the accounts as at 31st May 2001 and the accounts had since been auditted by our 2 internal auditors (viz Dr See Kye Yak and Mr Chan Kien Teck). These 2 internal auditors were elected from the 4th AGM.

For this financial year, our total income is $3,628 (from a total of 5 life members and 4 ordinary members as well as income from advertisement) while our expenses came up to $2,475. Our main expenses are mainly for the gatherings, expenditure for the last AGM, accountancy fees and a donation to the NTU Endowment Fund. We had decided to heavily subsidise the gatherings (which includes some ‘makan’ as well as inviting a prominent speaker) so as to encourage participation and interaction amongst members. Our taxes for the Year of Assessments 2001 using the auditted accounts of FY99/00 came up to $11.

The following are the different membership categories and fee structures for the Year 2000/2001:

  5. Ordinary Member:- $10 entrance fee & $12 annual subscription fee.

Life Member:- $10 entrance fee & $100 life membership fee.

Associate Member:- $10 entrance fee & $12 annual subscription fee.

Student Member:- $5 entrance fee & no annual subscription fee.

There was no change to the fee structure so that we can continue to encourage more of our alumni to join us.

There are several ordinary members whose membership had expired but have not renewed their membership. We would be writing to remind them to renew their membership or convert to life membership. We would like to strongly encourage all ordinary members to consider upgrading to life membership, to avoid the hassle of paying subscription fees every year and the fees may increase over the years.

The Committee is once again dominated by alumni from the ’85 batch. The vision is for the Committee to be made up of a representative (eg. the ex-President of the EEE Club) from each Class (or Batch) and each of the ex-Club Committee Members can form sub-committees. This would be ideal in terms of contacts for the various Classes and also to streamline the organisation of activities.

  1. Publicity/Activities
Currently our publicity is still mainly through the NTULink and the E-Cube World. We record a word of thanks to NTU and the School of EEE to allow us to publicise the Association and to include the application form for free in these magazines. We also have a Web Page at "http://www.ntu.edu.sg/home/eeealumni" which is currently linked to the NTU Web Page.

One highlight of the year was a talk on ‘Entrepreneurship in the post dot com era’ by Dr Finian Tan, Partner in the global VC firm Draper Fisher Jurvetson. This event was jointly organized with The Indus Entrepreneurs, popularly known as TiE based in the Silicon Valley, and attracted almost 100 participants.

  2. Conclusion
In conclusion, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of the Executive Committee who in spite of their heavy work and family commitments have taken time to contribute to the work of the Association as well as to attend meetings.

As the Association can still be considered to be in its early stages, the support from each member is crucial. I hope that all of us would not hesitate to come forward to serve in the committee or volunteer to help the committee and participate in any activities organised by the Association.
