Prof Guan is currently Professor in the School of Computer Science and Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. His is concurrently also the co-Director of Rehabilitation Research Institute of Singapore (RRIS), and Principal Scientist at Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*SATR), Singapore.

His research interests are in the fields of Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI), Brain-Machine Interfaces (BMI), Neural Engineering, Machine Learning, Data Analytics, and Neuro-technologies. He is very interested in developing medical technologies that are translational and scalable. He works very closely with clinicians to address unmet clinical needs and industries to bring innovations to target users.

His major contributions include:

o   Brain-computer Interface for stroke rehabilitation with significant clinical outcome

o   Innovative system for the treatment of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD) in children with significant efficacy outcome

o   Effective cognitive training for elderly with MCI or ARCD

o   Adaptive and robust Brain-computer Interface algorithms for motor imagery (FBCSP, regularization, session-to-session adaptation, channel selection, etc.)

o   Asynchronous and adaptive P300 BCI and its use in wheelchair control

o   fNIRS based Brain-computer interfaces

o   Novel use of BCI technologies in, for example, sleep, depression, anxiety, fatigue, pain, education, gaming, etc

He published over 280 refereed journal and conference papers and held 18 granted patents and applications. He licensed eight patents to USA and Singapore-based companies. He secured over $19M competitive research grant since 2009. As a leading scientist in BCI field, he delivered more than 50 keynote speech and invited talks. He was a recipient of the inaugural Annual BCI Research Award in US, the 2009 IES Prestigious Engineering Achievement Award, Singapore, and winner of BCI Competitions.

He played a leadership role in establishing medical technology research and development in A*STAR. He was the A*STAR MedTech Programme Leader of Neuro-Technology to lead and coordinate the neuro-technology effort at A*STAR.  He initiated and co-established the Rehabilitation Research Institute of Singapore (RRIS) – a $100M initiative by A*STAR, NTU, and National Health Group.  He is the Chair of Neuro-Technology Subpanel and a member of the National Taskforce on Neurological & Sense Disorders, appointed by HBMS EXCO. He established medical research at the Institute of Infocomm Research including the founding of the I2R Brain-Computer Interface Lab, the Neural & Biomedical Technology Department, and two large research programmes (with a strength of 60-80). Under his leadership, his group licensed technologies to 9 companies, led to 3 start-up companies and 2 spin-off companies. Their licensees raised over $65M fund collectively.
