Virtual Reality Systems and VRML

This short course provides an introduction to the current state of the art in virtual reality (VR), helps to set the foundations for a common taxonomy of virtual reality technologies and applications, and introduces the VR software tools commonly available for building VR applications. This is an abridged postraduate course offered by SCE. During this 3 day course, the following topics will be addressed:

First day

  • Main definitions and history of virtual reality.
  • Evolution of imagination to virtual reality.
  • Cognition of the real world.
  • Human factors
  • Motion in cyberspace and sensory conflicts in virtual reality.

    Second day

  • A generic VR system.
  • VR hardware.
  • VR applications.

    Third day

  • VR software.
  • VR in the net – Virtual Reality Modelling Language (Case study)

    On-line streaming video presentations follow the lectures. There are also 2 quizes and hand-on experience. Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to create their own VR worlds in the net as well as use VRML as a free 3D graphics visualisation software tool.
