Manufacturing Systems and Tech= nology Program

Singapore= –MIT Alliance (SMA)

Focusing on micro- and nano-manufacturing

The Manufacturing Systems= and Technology Program (MST) at MIT is one of several research programs funded through the Singapore-MIT Alliance Project (SMA). Founded in 1998, this project is an innovative engineering and life science educational and research collaborat= ion among three leading research universities in the world: the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the National University of Singapore (NUS),= and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Broadly speaking, the foc= us of MST is on micro- and nano-manufacturing. Specifically, the MST research program seeks to create a fundamental basis = for the design and optimal operation of various manufacturing processes used to produce micro/nano fluidic devices. The fundamental studies will inclu= de: materials and mechanics of several polymer-based processes, process modelin= g, precision automatic machines, analysis, design and fabrication, process control, instrumentation/metrology, applied statistic and process control.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> Applications driving these researc= h objectives include micro-reactors for biomedical diagnosis, fluid photonic devices, et= c.

REQUIREMENTS:

An ea= rned doctorate in engineering or materials science. Some experience in mi= cro/nano molding of thermoplastic polymers for manufacture of= microfluidic devices, soft-lithography manufacturing techniques using elastomeric materials, thermo-mechanically coupled experimentation, modeling and simulation of pol= ymer processing, nonlinear deformation and fracture of elas= tomeric materials, precision machine design, micro/nano device characterization, or biological assays development with lab-on-a-chip applications will be an advantage.

Candidates should be well-organized, collegial, han= ds-on, laboratory-oriented individuals who are comfortable working in a group with= a diverse array of people that includes faculty, graduate students, postdocs, support staff, and visiting researchers. Excellent written and oral communi= cation skills in English are essential.

The successful candidate will spend most of their time in Singapore at NTU. In addition, they will be expected to some time several months in USA at = MIT to work on collaborative the projects.

REMUNERATION:=

An SMA post-doctoral fellow is paid a monthly salary of S$3,500. In addition, he will be eligible for annual bonus upon very good annual performance. On appointment, he will be provided the most economical airfare from his permanent home to Singapore in order to enable = him to take up the position. Return airfare and additional subsistence allowance w= ill be provided for him for the research attachment period at MIT.
