Most Singaporeans live in government-subsidised flats (apartments) built by the Housing and Development Board (HDB). HDB flats are located in housing estates all over the island.
Each HDB estate is served by supermarkets, food centres, clinics, schools, libraries, shopping malls and public transport.
Most flats have standard layouts comprising bedrooms, a living room, kitchen and two bathrooms. We usually refer to the type as an indication of the size of the flat.

The monthly rental for a room can vary from S$350 to S$550. Rentals for an entire HDB flat range from S$800 (3-room) to about S$1,400 (five-room). Rental depends on the size, condition and location of the flat, such as its proximity to an MRT station. Other determining factors include the availability of nearby amenities and whether the flat is furnished, unfurnished or partially furnished.
Visit the Housing and Development Board (HDB) for median rents of HDB flats by town and flat type.
If you are interested in renting a private housing, you can choose to stay in apartments, condominium units (with facilities), bungalows, terrace or semi-detached houses.
Monthly rent will range from S$1,000 to S$2,500 for smaller apartments (less than 120sqm). Renting larger apartments may set you back more than S$3,000 a month.
