What is GIP?
The Global Immersion Programme (GIP) is a component of the Undergraduate Experience in NTU. It aims to provide NTU students with the experience of studying and working abroad.
Which are the countries that are included under GIP?
China, India, Indonesia, France, Vietnam, Switzerland and the United States of America are current GIP destinations with opportunities in other countries being sourced.
What can I gain from participating in GIP?
The benefits are tremendous. You can expect to:
- gain the cultural intelligence to work with and lead people of different backgrounds
- gain a broader perspective of your discipline
- develop your personal effectiveness, particularly your leadership and people skills
- acquire a network of contacts
Will I receive a certificate from NTU for participating in the programme?
Will my participation in GIP be reflected in my transcripts?
Yes, you will receive a certificate and your participation in GIP will be reflected in your academic transcripts.
Can students admitted directly to Second Year courses in NTU be allowed to participate in GIP?
Students must have completed one year of study in NTU before they can participate in GIP (with the exception of GIP Prelude). Thus, students admitted directly into Year 2 are allowed to participate in GIP during their Year 3.
I am supposed to pursue an Industrial Attachment / internship.
Can I pursue the GIP Study programme in lieu of the IA / internship?
Yes, you may pursue the GIP Study programme in India, France, Switzerland or the USA in lieu of your IA / internship.
Will the courses taken during GIP count towards academic unit requirement in NTU?
Yes, courses approved by your School will be considered for credit transfer upon successful completion.
How do I choose my courses for the Study Programmes?
Please consult your School’s GIP Coordinators for advice on choice of courses.
Will the grades I obtain from partner universities under GIP affect my GPA?
Courses completed at the partner university will be matched against relevant NTU courses and given a ‘Pass’ or ‘Fail’.
Your GPA will thus not be affected.
Will the work component under the Work and Study programme be graded and count towards my GPA?
Local internships and work components share a common set of grading criteria.
I am in the process of waiting for a placement under the GIP Work and Study programme in China.
In the meantime, a local company has accepted me for an internship. What should I do?
Once you accept the offer to participate in the GIP, you must reject the local internship. The Career & Attachment Office will inform the local company to disregard your application. You can rejoin the local internship selection and allocation process if your placement is subsequently unavailable.
Can I apply for INSTEP and GIP for the same semester?
Yes but you should not accept both if offered. A financial penalty applies if you withdraw from one programme to accept
the other. As offers for GIP and INSTEP are made at different times, you must decide, when you receive one offer, whether to take it within the stipulated “ACCEPT/REJECT” period.
Where can I obtain further information on GIP?
Please visit www.ntu.edu.sg/gip for information on info-sessions and updates on applications.
