Message from Chairman of EEE Safety Committee

About the EEE Safety Committee
Welcome to the website of the EEE Safety Committee. The Committee is committed to maintaining a safe and healthy working environment for all faculty, staff, students and visitors at the School. Safety and health is an integral part of the management of the School’s undertakings. The Committee will take all reasonably practicable steps to ensure that
  • the risks to safety and health throughout its undertakings are properly assessed;
  • there are safe systems of work in place;
  • there is a safe and healthy place of work; and
  • staff, students and others are given adequate supervision, information, instruction and training in order to carry out their work and studies safely.
Much of the work of the Committee is concerned with assisting the School in developing and improving systems and procedures for a safe and healthy workplace. The Committee is responsible for coordinating inter-laboratory, inter-school activities on general safety awareness and education, facilitating the sharing of information and experience on safety, health and environmental, and advising the Chair on matters pertaining to generic safety issues affecting the School.

The Committee is represented by six division members, one safety officer and two deputy safety officers. The Committee will meet once in six months to discuss and come up with suggestions in modifying the existing emergency procedures suiting each one of the laboratories, first aid procedures, electrical safety procedures, fire safety procedures, laboratory teaching and research safety procedures in chemical, electrical, mechanical and laser handling. It will make arrangements for safety courses suiting to staff and graduate students so that they are trained in safe practices relevant to their work and studies. In addition, the Committee will conduct the safety inspection visits to the various laboratories and offices of the School to maintain the workplace in a safe and healthy condition.

The Workplace Safety and Health Act (WSHA) came in force on 1 March 2006. The Act emphasizes the importance of managing workplace safety and health proactively by requiring stakeholders to take reasonably practicable measures to ensure the safety and health of all employees. It also focuses on effective management of workplace safety and health to achieve desired safety outcomes.

Staff and students at the workplace have a responsibility to take reasonable care for their own safety and health and for that of other persons who may be affected by their acts or omissions. Staff and student co-operation and commitment are essential to ensure successful implementation of the safety and health systems and procedures.

You are most welcome to call or email us with any health and safety concerns you have about your work or study environments.

So let us work together to keep our workplace safe and healthy.

Assoc Prof So Ping Lam
Chair, EEE Safety Committee
