 Module Description:                Lecture: 13 x 3 hrs; Tutorial: 12 x 1 hrs 

 

Content

This module introduces the basic ideas of waves and quantization in the physical world and provides the framework and basic tenets of quantum mechanics.

Harmonic and coupled oscillators; normal modes.

Wave equation; Fourier analysis; travelling waves; dispersion; impedance; reflection & transmission; diffraction & interference.

De Broglie waves; Schrodinger equation; position and momentum; energy and time.

Simple 1-D potentials; harmonic oscillator.

Observables and operators; angular momentum.

Hydrogen atom. Identical particles. Atoms.

 

Objectives

To familiarize students with concepts of waves in nature and the formalism of quantum mechanics.

 

Learning Outcomes

Students should be equipped with the ability to analyse oscillatory and wave behaviour, and to use the methods of quantum mechanics in atomic systems.

 

Module Assessment

Students will be assessed by:

a. Tutorial assignments (20%)

b. Term tests (20%)
