Module Description: Lecture: 13 x 3 hrs; Tutorial: 12 x 1 hrs
Content
This module introduces fundamental concepts of Newtonian mechanics.
Linear motion: motion; vectors; trajectories; Newton’s laws; forces; non-inertial frames; work and energy; energy conservation; momentum.
Rotational motion: rigid rotations; angular momentum; gyroscopes.
Harmonic motion.
Resonance.
Fluid mechanics.
Gravity; Kepler’s laws and orbits; law of ellipses.
Objectives
To familiarize students with basic concepts of the mechanical universe and their applications to other forms of motion.
Learning Outcomes
Students should be equipped with the ability to analyse problems in linear and rotational motion, and to apply their understanding to various forms of motion.

Students will be assessed by:
