Phasing Out Support for Windows 95/98/ME/NT
Please be informed that by the end of July 2005, to logon to the campus network or to access e-services, PCs must be running Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
Microsoft has already stopped the support for Windows 95, 98, ME and NT. The change is necessary for us to implement tighter network security measures.
If your PC is currently running Windows 95, 98, ME or NT, please upgrade the operating system to Windows 2000 or Windows XP by July 2005.
Dial-Up Access Hardware upgrade - 8 Mar 2004
We have upgraded the entire Dial-up access hardware. It can now support the V.92 data modem standard. This technology is able to perform Quick Connect and Modem on Hold.
Quick Connect shortens the modem connection time up to 50% on recognized connections.
Modem on hold allows the user to suspend a data connection to either initiate or receive a voice call. To receive calls while on-line, the user needs to subscribe (from your local telecom company) to the call waiting service, and for initiating calls, the three-way calling service.
To enjoy the above facilities, you also need to have a V.92 data/fax modem.
Server upgrade - 22 Jul 2003
As we have upgraded the operating system of the existing dial-in server from Win NT 4.0 to Windows 2000, we are now able to apply tighter rules and controls such as disallowing graduated students (alumni) from dialing in. This is to free up the existing lines for the rest of the NTU population.
Login Format (General Reminder) - 21 Jul 2003
Please use the following format when you are prompted for account particulars when using dial-in or vpn :
(for student account holders)
username: student\xxx
password: zzzz
or
(for staff account holders)
username: staff\xxx
password: zzzz
or
(for assoc account holders who are corporate users. Note that alumni are not corporate users.)
username: assoc\xxx
password: zzzz
where xxx is your userid and zzzz is your user password
