  • Aximsite is a forum for Dell's PDAs.
  • Dave's PDA Place has lots of information and news and comparisons on PDAs.
  • Geekzone offers IT, mobility, wireless, handheld and pocket PC news
  • Microsoft Mobile Home page Check out the stuff that Microsoft has for mobile devices running its various operating systems.
  • MobilitySite is a UK-based site for tech news, reviews, and forums. Its forum overs HP iPaqs and other miscellanous Pocket PC related subjects as well.
  • pocketnow.com features reviews, news, and software library on Pocket PC devices and software
  • Pocket PC magazine is a print magazine on Pocket PC stuff. It also has a down-sized mobile version at http://www.pocketpcmag.com/mobile/
  • PocketPCsoft.net Other than offering software downloads, the site also has a forum for PocketPC related discussions.
  • Solsie.com Has mobile tech and entertainment related news. It often has free software for lucky survey participants. So watch the site often! Or you can subscribe to their RSS feed so you don't miss the boat.
  • Windows Mobile 5.0 Fix Site is an off-shot from pocketnow.com that focuses on issues relating to the latest version of Windows software for the mobile market, aka Mobile 5.0. One the more priced information is a list of software that is compatible with Mobile 5.0, listed in order of popularity.

 

Setting up for NTU's Environment

  • Working with ActiveSync and Outlook Once set up, you can view your emails, calendars, tasks, contacts on your PDA.

  • In summary, these are the essential settings for your Mobile 5.0 PDA to work in NTU:
    • Proxy: proxy.ntu.edu.sg Port: 8080
    • VPN Gateway: vpngate.ntu.edu.sg Type: PPTP
    • In ActiveSync, mail server address: webmail.ntu.edu.sg
    • Wireless network (NTUWireless): NTUWL  (all uppercase)
      WEP or Data encryption: Disabled
    • To surf wirelessly, ensure that proxy and wireless network are set correctly. Enable the wireless connection on your device. Then open browser to surf to any external site. You will be asked to authenticate yourself on the wireless network initially. Username is  staff/username or student/username Password is your network password. You can surf per normal after this.
In addition to the above, Pocket PC 2002 and 2003 users have a few more extra settings which can be found in the abovementioned quick start guides.
  • Note that proxy setting should be again set in the Connections section for Avantgo if you are using it in NTU. The NTU proxy settings should be removed if you are using Skype or are not using NTU's network.
 

Software Depositories

  • CNet's Download.com has a rather obscured area for Pocket PC software.
  • Handango is a commercial software retailer. Some of its downloads offer the option of re-downloading the software later should you lose the earlier link. But this comes as additional cost to you, the buyer. Do check the version number of the software in this site versus the one in PocketGear. Sometimes it can be outdated.
  • Free Software by Lincomatic has the popular PocketDHCP ver 0.22 for Pocket PC 2002 and other network related freeware written by the same programmer
  • Microsoft's Download Center's software for Windows Mobile
  • PocketGear is a commercial software retailer though there are the occasional freeware in its collection as well. Look out for possible "coupon" codes for discounts through time-limited offers or other product tie-ups.
  • Pocketnow.com's software library.
  • PocketPCsoft.net site touts a good number of freeware in its collection.
  • PocketPCFreewares is site that lists many freeware. They have a preview of a new sub-site that displays more rapidly, as well as have a RSS feed.
  • Softpedia This depository has many categories. This one for Handheld contains many shareware and some freeware.
 

Others

  • Java on Pocket PC (Unofficial FAQ) is a dated but still interesting read on running Java on the Pocket PC.
  • WM Themes Home is a site with many free themes which you can download and install onto your PDA. If you want to create your own themes then you can buy their software.
