Adding Network Printers Quick Start Guide 

NOTE: In order to use network printer in campus, non-domian computer must first connect via VPN to NTU network.

How to set up a Network Printer in:

Network printer queue name:

How to Setup a Network Printer in Windows Vista
 
  1. Click on Start > Control Panel

  2. Double click the Printers icon in the Control Panel window

  3. Select Add a printer in the Printers window



  4. Choose "Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer" in the Add Printer window

  5. If the desired printer is listed, select it and click Next.
    Otherwise, click "The printer that I want isn't listed" and click Next



  6. Obtain the network printer name and path from your IT administrator. At the "Select a shared printer by name" input box, type the network printer path and name in the form \\<servername>\<printer queue name>

    Click Next

  7. With the correct printer path and name keyed in, the next 2 windows will appear in a short while.



    Click the Install Driver

  8. The driver installation could take a few minutes to complete. Upon completion, the following window will appear. Choose 'Set as the default printer' if desired, and click Next



  9. At this stage, the installation process has completed. Click 'Print a test page' if desired, and click Finish
     
  10. In the Printers window, you should now see the newly installed printer

How to Setup a Network Printer in Windows XP Pro 

  1. Click on Start > Settings > Printers and Faxes 

  2. Double click the Add Printer icon and click on Next

  3. Select A Network printer .... and click Next 



  4. Select Connect to this printer... and type into the Name box, the network path to that network printer. In this example the network printer is \\staff2\ccgo1. The actual path for your printer will be different (Please check here for the network printer queue name for printers in the Libraries).
    Click on Next when done.



  5. Leave the selection at No and click Next. The printer driver will then be installed on your printer. Click on Finish to complete the installation.



  6. The printer name or icon will appear in your Printers and Faxes folder as shown.

How to Setup a Network Printer in Windows 2000

  1. Click on Start > Settings > Printers 

  2. Double click Add Printer and click on Next in the Add Printer Wizard

  3. Select Network Printer and click Next 



  4. Select the option "Type the printer name, or click Next to browse for a printer". At the "Name" input box, type the path to the network printer in the form \\<servername>\<printer queue name>. (Please check here for the network printer queue name for printers in the Libraries).

    Click on Next to continue. The printer driver will automatically be installed. Click on Finish when done. 



  5. The new network printer should appear in your Printers folder. If it is the only printer installed on your system it will be automatically set as the default printer as shown by the tick icon beside the printer. Right-click your mouse over the printer icon and select Properties. This will launch the Properties dialog for the printer



  6. At the General tab, click Print Test Page to test that the printer is working.  A dialog box will appear to ask you to confirm whether the test print was successful. You can verify this by checking at printer itself. Click OK if the printing was successful.

  7. Note that if you have more than one printer, you can set the newly installed printer as the default by right-clicking your mouse on the printer and selecting Set as Default Printer

How to Setup a Network Printer in Windows 9x/ME 

  1. Click Start > Settings > Printers

  2.  Double-click the Add Printer icon.



  3.  At the "Add Printer Wizard" window, click Next

  4. Select Network Printer and click Next 



  5. At the "Network path or queue name:" box, type the path to the network printer. This has the format \\<servername>\<printer-queue-name>. Check with your administrators what the network path should be. The network path in the picture below is just an example. (Please check here for the network printer queue name for printers in the Libraries).



  6. The below window will be displayed if the printer drivers are not available at the server end. If so, click Have Disk... to install the drivers locally on your computer. 



     
    Click browse to navigate to the location where you can find the Windows 98 printer driver for your printer. This will vary depending on where the driver files are located. In this example they are located in drive F: 


     
    Select the .inf file displayed. The actual file name will vary, refer to manufacturer's guide. Click OK 

  7. The Description for you printer will be shown. The below is an example and will vary depending on your printer. Click Next



  8. When the installation is complete, click on Finish
