The University Blue Award is our highest recognition to NTU athletes who have demonstrated dedication to NTU sports and who also excelled in the international or regional competitive arena.  This year, we presented the University Blue Award to our Sportsman of the Year, Mr Adriel Chua Boon Rong.

Adriel is a rare talent in his field of sports. He took up the sport by chance about 8 years ago, and his talent was spotted by the national team selectors within his first few local competitions.

In year 2007 and 2008, he participated in the Asian Grand Prix Events, and in both occasion, he was ranked within top 10 in the competitions. In July 2008, he represented the Singapore Combined Universities to the World University Archery Championship in Taiwan, and ranked 7th overall.

In the SEA Games 2009 at Korat, Thailand, he won an individual Silver medal and was the best individual performer amongst NTU students at the Games. In September 2010, he represented the Singapore Combined Universities again to the World University Archery Championship in China, and achieved a remarkable 6th position with competitors from 21 countries.

Sportswoman of the Year 2011

Dipna Lim Prasad ~ Track & Field

Miss Dipna Lim Prasad was presented the Sportswoman of the Year 2010/2011. Dipna chose to enroll in the Singapore Sports School as the pioneer batch of students after her PSLE back in 2004 to further her talent while pursuing her secondary education.

In 2009, she set the national 100m hurdle record of 14.72 sec.  But in the beginning of 2010, Dipna suffered an ankle injury and was advised by doctors to lay off hurdle for a year.  This did not pose as an excuse for Dipna, who has been competitive in athletics since 11 years old, to idle. Instead she continued with gym workouts, long, slow jogs and rehabilitation exercises diligently, hoping to get better and run again.

In October 2010, she competed in the 200m sprint at the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Games as her ankle was still too fragile to handle the impact of hurdling and she finished first in the final with a time of 24.68s missing the national record set in 1984 by 0.14s.

In the last academic year, she had proudly donned the NTU running vest, representing NTU and coming in first in all events she competed from 100m, 200m, 400m & 100m hurdles in our local SAA track and field competitions.

In the recent May to July vacation alone, she had represented Singapore at the Thailand Open, Malacca Open, Taiwan Open and Asian Track and Field Championship where she better her national 100m hurdles record the 4th time in 2010/2011 to 14.23 sec.  She now looks forward to take part in the upcoming SEA games in Palembang, Indonesia.

SPIRIT Awards 2010/11

An Extract from the Speech given by the NTU Silat Club President
at the Sports Awards Ceremony 2011:

Ilyas came in to NTU Silat club as a student like you and me and 2003 and took on the mantle of leading the club 2004 while also chairing NTU Invitational Silat Championship in the same year. He started coaching NTU Silat Club in 2006 and has never looked back since. His track record in coaching NTU Silat Club speaks for itself, his commitment, ability and quality.

“Process not the end. Performance not the result”. These are Ilyas’s words of wisdom to his pesilats in trainings and competition. He is always one who emphasizes on the process of doing something, not just rushing to the end product. He values effort and determination more than talent and ability. In competitions, he never fails to stress that what he looks out for is not the gold, silver or bronze medal. He looks for performance, for application of what we have learnt. To him, being the best and doing our best that we can is the ultimate prize for every pesilat. To me, that’s character .......

An Extract from the Speech given by the NTU Women Football Team Captain
at the Sports Awards Ceremony 2011:

Passionate, intense and dedicated are some adjectives that describe the man behind the success of the NTU Women’s football team in recent years. Most of us, if we are lucky, have had an experience of having someone influential in our lives and as for me, that person is Coach Kumar.

He took over the team in January 2009 and in that very same year; we won a medal in the FAS Women Youth League coming in as the first runners-up at the national youth level. In the time that our team has been under his charge, we continued to progress and achieved more. Soon enough, we became the FAS Women Youth League Champions in 2010, being unbeaten throughout the whole season. And again, this year in 2011, we successfully defended our title with an unbeaten record once again. Just two weeks ago, he helped us bagged another championship in the 2011/12 Singapore University Games (SUniG) Football, bringing us 3 straight SUniG gold under his guidance. His capabilities in football and coaching are unquestionable ......
