Types of housing
Public Housing
  • Most Singaporeans live in government-subsidised flats built by the Housing and Development Board (HDB). HDB flats are located in housing estates all over the island.
  • Each HDB estate/neighbourhood is served by supermarkets, food centres, clinics, schools, libraries, shopping malls and public transport.
  • Most flats have standard layout comprising of bedrooms, living room, kitchen and 2 bathrooms. We usually refer to the type as an indication of the size of the flat. Please see table below:

Type Size (sqm) Additional information
3 room 65 to 75 2 bedrooms
4 room 90 to 100 3 bedrooms
5 room 110 to 120 3 bedrooms and 1 dining room
Executive 130 to 140 3 bedrooms,study room and 1 dining room

The monthly rental for a room can vary from S$350 to S$550. Rentals for an entire HDB flat range from S$800 (3-room) to about S$1,400 (five-room). Rental depends on the size, condition and location of the flat, such as its proximity to the MRT station. Other determining factors include amenities and whether the flat is furnished, unfurnished or partially furnished.

Private housing

If you are interested in renting a private housing, you can choose to stay in apartments, condominium units (with facilities), bungalows, terrace or semi-detached houses.

Rental will range from $1000 to $2500 for smaller apartments (less than 120sqm). Renting a bigger will cost more than $3000 a month.
