Having gone through the tussles in choosing a career and the challenging transitions from university to work life, have you ever thought of advising your juniors who will go through a similar path one day?

Here is a chance for you as NTU Alumni to guide your juniors (students and new graduates) in exploring their career options. The Mentor-Link connects our students and new graduates to their more experienced seniors – the ALUMNI – through a variety of contact sessions.

We believe that nothing beats you, an NTU graduate, helping a prospective NTU graduate for you have been through that stage before. The NTU Career Centre invites you from various sectors and walks of life to participate as volunteers to share your industrial experiences with your juniors and assist them in their career choice and adapting to the work culture.

What is Mentor-Link?

As an alumnus volunteer, you will be listed on our database at the Career Centre where students could search the database to locate a volunteer whom they want to talk to, such as an alumni working for a particular employer, an industry or career field they want to explore.

Our database will carry information related to your job and the organisation you work in. Your contact information will not be listed on the database.

Students who are interested to speak to you would need to register with the Career Centre which will only release your contact information upon verifying the genuineness of the request. The Career Centre will initiate the contact by connecting the student and you via email. Subsequently, the student will contact you directly for a contact session based on how you specified you want to be contacted (through phone, email or face-to-face appointment).

Your commitment as a Volunteer

We understand that you have a busy schedule, so the program is designed with that in mind. All you need to do is to tell us how much time you would allocate to having contact sessions with students in a month, and how you would like our students to contact you, be it through phone, email or meeting up face-to-face. At the Career Centre, we will refer students to you based on these specifications and monitor the referral process to keep it manageable for you.

We strongly encourage that you give each student referred by the Centre a contact session. The time committed for the contact session might vary depends on the type of information the student needs. And if you think that you need to have subsequent contact sessions with the student, it would be based on mutual agreement between you and the student, at your convenience. However, you are not obligated to provide more than one contact session to each student referred.

Role of a Volunteer in a Contact Session

Contact sessions are scheduled time where students talk to a volunteer on an aspect that they are interested to find out. Some examples of questions that students might ask during a contact session could be:

  •         What is the company work culture?
  •         How is it like working in this industry?
  •         What kinds of skills are needed to be working in this organisation/ position?
  •         What kind of prospects does a fresh graduate has in this organisation/industry?
  •         What are some tips to survive in organisation/industry?

As alumni volunteer, MENTOR-LINK will tap on YOUR INDUSTRIAL & INSIDER'S KNOWLEDGE as a VALUABLE RESOURCE to ADVISE our students & PREPARE them to transit to working life.
