FAQ- Freshmen Year GPA Exemption

1. What is the Freshmen Year GPA Exemption?

The exemption from GPA computation applies for up to 6 courses that students do not pass on their first attempt in their Freshmen Year.  This mitigates the impact on GPA of unsuccessful first attempts so that students focus on learning rather than on grades.  It serves to ease freshmen in their transition into university life and help those who may need more time to adjust to the rigours of university education. The GPA exemption applies to:

  • both examinable and non-examinable courses, excluding Pass/Fail courses and courses which the students have opted to be graded as Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (since these are already excluded from GPA computation).
  • courses taken in a student’s first 2 semesters of study in NTU, including adjoining Special Terms.

2. Who are eligible for the Freshmen Year GPA Exemption?

The Freshmen Year GPA Exemption is applicable for students who are admitted to NTU from AY14-15 for their first year of studies.  Students admitted before AY14-15 are not eligible.

3.I am a direct-entry or part-time student admitted to NTU in AY14-15, am I eligible for the Freshmen Year GPA Exemption?

Yes, Freshmen Year GPA Exemption is applicable to you for the first year of your studies in NTU.

4.What types of courses does the Freshmen Year GPA exemption applies?

The GPA exemption applies to all course types as long as they are letter-graded courses that students do not pass on their first attempt in the Freshmen Year.  It does not apply to Pass/Fail courses and courses which the students have opted to be graded as Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U).

5.What about fail grades on first attempt for courses taken after the Freshmen Year?

The exemption from GPA computation does not apply beyond the Freshmen Year.

6. If I have less than 6 courses with GPA exemption in the Freshmen Year, can the remaining quota be applied to courses taken after my Freshmen Year?

No, the GPA exemption is not applicable beyond your Freshmen Year.

7.Will this apply to repeat attempts with fail grade for courses taken during the Freshmen Year?

No, it is not applicable for courses that do not make the minimum pass grade on the second or subsequent attempts, even if taken during the Freshmen Year.

8. Do I have a choice of which course to apply the GPA exemption?

No, the system will automatically exclude the eligible courses from GPA exemption in each semester, up to 6 courses over the Freshmen Year.

9.Will the GPA exempted courses be reflected on the transcript?

Yes, the grades for all attempts including the GPA exempted courses remain on the transcript.

10.What will be reflected as my results in a semester where all my courses are either exempted from GPA computation and/or Pass/Fail courses and/or S/U courses?

Your semester GPA will be reflected as ‘nil’; and you will not be promoted to the next study year, even if the AU criterion is met.
