Qualifying English Test (QET) 

 CRITERIA FOR QET

 

Unless granted exemption, students admitted to all undergraduate courses of study in NTU  are required to take the Qualifying English Test (QET), which  determines whether they take English Proficiency as a subject of study.

 

A)  Students are exempted from the QET if they present any of the following:
 

General Paper of the Singapore Cambridge GCE 'A' Level Examination (sat in 2007 onwards) : A, B, C, D, E

  General Paper of the Singapore Cambridge GCE 'A" Level Examination (sat in 2006 or earlier) : A1, A2, B3, B4, C5, C6
  Knowledge and Inquiry of the Singapore Cambridge GCE 'A' Level Examination A, B, C, D, E, S 
  English Language of the Singapore Cambridge GCE 'O' Level Examination (for Polytechnic graduates only): A1, A2, B3, B4 
  IELTS : a minimum of 6 for the Writing sub-test
  TOEFL: a minimum of 570 and above (paper-based) or 90 and above (iBT)
  SAT1: a minumum of 600 for the Verbal section or 7 for the Essay section 
  IB: a minimum of 4 for English A1
IB: a minimum of 4 for English as Language B (Higher Level), or a minimum of 6 for English as Language B (Standard Level)
NUS High School : an overall CAP of 2.5 in English Language
  MUET (Malaysian University English Test): Band 6 and a minimum of 50 for Writing 
  LPI (Language Proficiency Index) : a minimum of Level 5
  TEE (Tertiary Entrance Exam): a minimum of Grade C for English (3A/3B)
  India Standard XII: a minimum of 60% for English 
Pearson Test of English (Academic): a minimum of 59 for commuicative skills in writing
 Please note that IELTS and TOEFL results are only valid for 2 years from the date of the test.

IMPORTANT: With the exception of the first four types of qualification (GCE 'A' Level General Paper, GCE'A' level Knowledge and Inquiry, and GCE 'O' Level English Language), students must submit documentary proof of all other types of qualifications listed above to the Office of Academic Servcies (OAS) by Monday 25 July 2011 , failing which they have to sit for the QET.  Students who have obtained an improved grade in their second attempt of GCE 'A' Level General Paper or GCE 'O' Level English Language must also submit documentary proof to OAS. Please attach this cover note when you submit your document to OAS.

 B)  Students who are unable to take the test must seek formal leave of absence in writing. Please write to the Office of Academic Services, Student Services Centre, Level 1, 42 Nanyang Avenue, Singapore 639815.
