28th General Assembly of the International Union of Physics and Applied Physics

5 to 7 November 2014, NTU

The 28th IUPAP General Assembly is a remarkable event in the 90 year history of IUPAP as the General Assembly has only twice previously been held in Asia, both times in Japan.

In relation to the General Assembly, there are also special public lectures by distinguished speakers including Professor William Phillips and Professor Brian Schmidt who are appointed as Lee Kong Chian Distinguished Professor in relation to their visits.

Professor William Phillips is a leading researcher in laser cooling of atoms at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. He is internationally known for advancing basic knowledge and new techniques to chill atoms to extremely low temperatures. Professor Phillips was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1997, one of the highest honours for a U.S. scientist or engineer. In the same year, he was awarded the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to laser cooling (and especially for his invention of the Zeeman slower), a technique to slow the movement of gaseous atoms in order to better study them along with Professors Steven Chu and Cohen-Tannoudji.

Professor Brian Schmidt is a distinguished astronomer at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Australian National University, formerly known as Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatories. He is known for his research in several areas of astronomy, most notably with exploding stars called supernovae. Professor Schmidt holds an Australia Research Council Federation Fellowship and was elected to the Royal Society in 2012.  He was awarded both the 2006 Shaw Prize in Astronomy and the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics along with Professors Saul Perlmutter and Adam Riess for the discovery that the Universe is accelerating in its expansion.
