For her dedicated service and commitment to the community, Nanyang Technological University is proud to present Ms Chan Wei Ling Cheryl with the Nanyang Outstanding Young Alumni Award.

Ms Chan was elected last September as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Fengshan single-member constituency, having been unveiled as the People’s Action Party (PAP) candidate on 27 August 2015. The causes dear to her heart are the elderly and children from less privileged backgrounds. New to politics, she is nonetheless a familiar face with her constituents, having started volunteering 10 years earlier. Then, having written to the PAP to ask how she could serve, the party suggested that she help out in the Fengshan area since she was a resident there.

She joined the grassroots organisation in Fengshan, where she served in the Neighbourhood Committee and Youth Executive Committee. She also lent her support to Meet-the-People sessions and house visits. Later, in 2012, she was appointed Chair of the Fengshan Community Club Management Committee and became a member of the Citizen’s Consultative Committee and East Coast Town Council.

Aside from her role as an MP, Ms Chan enjoys a successful career with gas and engineering firm The Linde Group as its Head of Secondary Industries (Corporate Strategy & Market Intelligence). She joined the company in 2007 and has previously held management positions on market development, product portfolio development and supply chain operations in its electronics sector. Prior to joining Linde, she was with Kulicke & Soffa, a global leader in the design and manufacture of semiconductor, LED and electronic assembly equipment.

A proud graduate of NTU, she is keen to pay it forward and returned to her alma mater in July to be the Convocation Speaker for the School of Materials Science and Engineering. Over the years, Ms Chan has also donated to NTU’s iGave programme, in particular for the Ma Jan Memorial Fund and the Alumni Fund.

Currently, Ms Chan is also the PAP Women’s Wing Deputy District Advisor (South East), East Coast-Fengshan Town Council Executive Committee Vice Chairman, and a member of the Public Petitions Committee.

For her contributions to Singapore society, Ms Chan was honoured with the Pingat Bakti Masyarakat (Public Service Medal) in 2013.
