For his accomplishments and remarkable contributions to the field of photography, Nanyang Technological University is proud to present Mr Chern Xianjun, Alphonsus with the Nanyang Outstanding Young Alumni Award.
Mr Chern is an Executive Photojournalist with Singapore’s largest daily broadsheet, The Straits Times, and has received numerous in-house and international awards for his editorial work. In March, he scored a hat-trick at the Singapore Press Holdings’ annual English/Malay/Tamil Media group awards ceremony.
Mr Chern and Ms Ng Sor Luan won the Best Video of the Year award for their behind-the-scenes look at the tough training routine of the Black Knights, the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s elite aerial acrobatics team. He also won the Feature Picture of the Year for his photo of the Black Knights in formation over the South China Sea, which he shot from the open ramp of a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft flying at 10,000 feet. Finally, he received the Best Interactive Infographics of the Year award for his virtual tour of the National Gallery Singapore prior to its opening.
On an international level, Mr Chern has been honoured at the Asian Media Awards organised by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers. He is a two-time recipient of the Best in Photojournalism Award, Feature Photography, receiving the Gold Award in 2014 and the Bronze Award this year for his features on the Singapore Armed Forces’ parachute training course and the Black Knights respectively.
Last year, at the Society for News Design’s prestigious Best of Newspaper Design competition, which welcomes submissions from magazines and general circulation newspapers published anywhere in the world, he and Ms Caroline Chia won the Photography/Multiple Photos Photo page or spread category – Award for Excellence for their feature “Survival of the Fittest” which documented in excruciating detail the Republic of Singapore Navy's Combat Diver Course, the highlight of which was when Mr Chern and Ms Chia stayed up with the trainees for five continuous days and nights during their Hell Week.
Mr Chern's work has been exhibited at the Asian Civilisations Museum, the ArtScience Museum, the National Library, and the National Museum of Singapore.
Always keen to share his love for photography with budding young photographers, Mr Chern has also given professional and career guidance talks at NTU, Serangoon Junior College, the Singapore Coffee Festival, and the National Museum in conjunction with the World Press Photo exhibition 2016.

今年3月，在新加坡报业控股英文、马来文与淡米尔文媒体集团常年新闻奖颁奖礼上，陳先生就连中三元，囊括三项大奖。他与摄影同事黄素銮女士深入新加坡空军部队基地，合力采访捕捉了精英特技飞行队伍黑骑士 (Black Knights) 幕后艰辛的训练过程，凭这段难得一见的视频获颁全年最佳新闻视频奖项。而另一幅以黑骑士飞行队伍在南中国海上空呈献特技造型的摄影作品，也为他赢得全年最佳新闻特写照片奖。这张照片得来不易，陳先生当时是乘坐新加坡空军部队C-130 运输机飞上一万英尺高空，从开敞着的舱门拍下这幅得奖作品。他获得的第三个奖项是全年最佳互动式信息图表奖项，他在新加坡国家美术馆开幕前入馆拍摄和制作了虚拟导览影像，为读者提供了独特又实用的参观指南。
去年国际新闻版面设计协会举办的最佳报纸版面设计奖中，陳先生与摄影同事谢素敏女士采访拍摄新加坡海军部队蛙人特种部队培训课程，他们在魔鬼周连续5天拍摄蛙人特种部队的训练，制作出跨版新闻特写组图“Survival of the Fittest”（适者生存），荣获“摄影/数张照片组图版面或跨版”组别卓越奖。这项常年奖项在全球报业极具声望，参赛作品来自全球杂志和报纸。
