A champion in Indonesia’s war on terror

For his dedication to combating terrorism and maintaining law and order, Nanyang Technological University is proud to present Police General Dr Muhammad Tito Karnavian with the Nanyang Alumni Achievement Award.

Police General Karnavian is currently the Chief of Indonesian National Police. Prior to that, he was the head of Indonesia’s National Counter-terrorism Agency (BNPT) when he was leading the country’s war on terror. And Police General Karnavian certainly has the credentials to do so, having topped his class at the police academy in 1987 and also led Indonesia’s elite Densus 88 counter-terrorism squad as well as the Jakarta police force.

While Police General Karnavian took up the position with the BNPT in March this year, he has been combating terrorism since 1999 when Indonesia’s then-Defence Minister faced an assassination attempt by an Islamist group. He set his sights on neutralising the terror group in Poso, Sulawesi, led by Indonesia’s most wanted terrorist Santoso, who was killed by Indonesian forces in July this year.

Previously, from June 2015, he served as the Jakarta police chief, a stint in which he won praise for the way he maintained security following attacks by Islamic State sympathizers. He has also had stints as chief of the Papua police (2012 to 2014) and head of Densus 88 (2010 to 2011). Police General Karnavian assisted Densus 88 in the successful hunts for Noordin Mohammad Top, at one stage Indonesia’s most-wanted fugitive, and Azahari Husin, the man believed to be behind the 2002 Bali bombings.

A firm believer in the importance of international and regional cooperation in today’s environment of international terrorist networks, Police General Karnavian is often invited to lend his expertise at related conferences, meetings or forums. He headed the Indonesian Delegation to an Interpol conference on counter-nuclear smuggling in 2012, spoke at a conference in Cambodia on Terrorism and Political Conflicts in 2009 and attended the Anti-Terrorism and Information-Sharing Conference with the Singapore Police Force in 2005.

Police General Karnavian has received numerous accolades for his work, including the Distinguished Policeman Medal, Military Medal for Loyalty to Motherland, Military Medal for Good Service to Motherland, and the Military Medal for Good Service to the World.
