Singapore politician

For her service and contributions to the public sector, Nanyang Technological University is proud to present Ms Sim Ann with the Nanyang Alumni Achievement Award.

Ms Sim Ann is the Senior Minister of State at the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) and the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. Prior to her recent appointment to MTI, she had been the Senior Minister of State for the Ministry of Finance. She also holds the appointment of Deputy Government Whip.

Previously, she was the Minister of State, Ministry of Education & Ministry of Communications and Information(MCI). While at MCI, she chaired the inaugural term of the National Translation Committee, advocating for effective communication in all four official languages through quality translation. This was inspired by her experience of being among the first batch of students pursuing a Graduate Diploma in Translation and Interpretation (GDTI) at NTU in 2005. She has also been the Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Communications and Information, Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Law. She is currently involved in the Small and Medium Enterprises  deep dive as part of the Committee on Future Economy, and will be co-chairing the Lifestyle Cluster under the Council for Skills, Innovation and Productivity.  She is also the Co-Chairman of the National Committee on Youth Guidance and Rehabilitation and a Council Member of the National Youth Council.

Ms Sim has been volunteering at the grassroots level in her local community since 2002. The following year, she became a member of the Bukit Timah Citizens’ Consultative Committee. During that period, she also contributed as Chief Editor of the Bukit Timah newsletter, as well as served as Vice Chairman of the Bukit Timah Community Club Management Committee.

Ms Sim first stepped into the political arena in the 2011 General Elections when she contested in the Holland-Bukit Timah Group Representation Constituency (GRC) as one of the four-member People’s Action Party team led by current Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan. In 2015, alongside Dr Balakrishnan, Member of Parliament (MP) Liang Eng Hwa and MP Christopher de Souza, she contested and retained the right to represent Holland-Bukit Timah GRC as an MP.
