Previously, she was the Minister of State, Ministry of Education & Ministry of Communications and Information(MCI). While at MCI, she chaired the inaugural term of the National Translation Committee, advocating for effective communication in all four official languages through quality translation. Ms Sim has been volunteering at the grassroots level in her local community since 2002. The following year, she became a member of the Bukit Timah Citizens’ Consultative Committee. During that period, she also contributed as Chief Editor of the Bukit Timah newsletter, as well as served as Vice Chairman of the Bukit Timah Community Club Management Committee.

Ms Sim first stepped into the political arena in the 2011 General Elections when she contested in the Holland-Bukit Timah Group Representation Constituency (GRC) as one of the four-member People’s Action Party team led by current Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan. In 2015, alongside Dr Balakrishnan, Member of Parliament (MP) Liang Eng Hwa and MP Christopher de Souza, she contested and retained the right to represent Holland-Bukit Timah GRC as an MP.
