Founder of one of Singapore’s top ten largest accounting firms
In recognition of the great success he has achieved with his company Nexia TS, Nanyang Technological University is proud to present Mr Tan Song Kok, Henry with the Nanyang Alumni Achievement Award.
Mr Tan is the Managing Director of Nexia TS and the Chairman of Nexia China. He was the past Regional Chairman of Nexia Asia Pacific and a Board Member of Nexia International, an international accounting network. Mr Tan began his career with Big Four audit firm KPMG in 1988 after graduating with a First Class Honours degree in Accountancy and receiving the 1988 Singapore Society of Accountants Book Prize. His stint at KPMG included a two-year period at its Melbourne office where he became a Chartered Accountant in Australia. A mere six years after entering the workforce, he left KPMG to start his own business with another partner. Together, the duo started Tan & Sitoh Associates, which initially focused on the niche area of helping SMEs to gain public listing.
Twenty-odd years later, the company is now known as Nexia TS and is one of the top ten largest accounting firms in Singapore with some 220 employees. Recently, the firm was awarded the Innovation Award (Large Practice Category) under the Business Excellence platform at the Singapore Accountancy Awards 2016 and the Global Awards 2016 in Accountancy & Auditing (Singapore) by Corporate LiveWire. Mr Tan’s vision also saw Nexia TS expand into China in 1997 and he currently serves as Chairman of Nexia China, an accounting network in China with more than 1,500 partners and professionals located in 23 cities. Nexia China has overarching responsibility for the Nexia member firms, associates and branch offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Guangzhou and also oversees Nexia's expansion in China.
In addition to his work with Nexia TS, Mr Tan is also currently a Director of China New Town Development Company Limited, YHI International Limited and Raffles Education Corporation Limited. He is also serving as a Member of Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants Corporate Reporting Committee and Member of the SQP Council of Singapore Accountancy Commission. He was previously the President of Spirit of Enterprise and Entrepreneur Organisation. He has received numerous accolades for his outstanding work as a leader and entrepreneur which includes the Spirit of Enterprise Award (2004 Honouree Recipient), Midas Touch Asia Enterprise Awards 2013 (Platinum Award), SME One Asia Awards 2013 (Distinguished Award) and the Nexia International Roy Hoffman Award 2013.
A firm believer in paying it forward, Mr Tan has offered both internship and full-time employment opportunities to Nanyang Business School (NBS) graduates. He has also provided monetary support to set up the Nexia TS Public Accounting Corporation Scholarship and the Entrepreneurs’ Organisation Bursary Fund. As a member of the NBS Alumni Advisory Board, Mr Tan also advises the NBS Dean and other senior management on the School’s strategic direction. He has also been instrumental in the setting up of the Nexia TS Public Accounting Corporation Financial Scholarship with most tertiary institutions, to assist financially needy students.
Mr Tan is a Fellow of the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants, Insolvency Practitioners Association of Singapore, Chartered Accountants in Australia and New Zealand, Australia CPA and the Singapore Institute of Directors. He is also an Accredited Tax Advisor (Income Tax) of Singapore Institute of Accredited Tax Professionals Limited and a Member of the Institute of Internal Auditors.
