Passionate contributor to the global basketball scene
For his remarkable contributions to basketball in Singapore and the world, Nanyang Technological University is proud to present Dr Koh Koon Teck with the Nanyang Alumni Achievement Award.
An Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Education (NIE) and Assistant Head for its graduate programmes, Dr Koh is also an active contributor to the local basketball scene and led the men’s team to bronze as team manager at both the 2013 and 2015 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. His expert contribution in the area of sports science support for the players and coaches was especially vital at the 2013 event when the team broke their duck to win their first SEA Games medal since 1979. As the Chairman of the Basketball Association of Singapore’s (BAS) Coaching & Development Committee for 14 years, he has helped formulate policies and programmes to promote and develop basketball at all levels here.
Dr Koh has devoted his energies to developing the sport at an international level by serving the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) in various roles since 2010. At present, as Chairman of FIBA Asia’s Coaches Committee, he comes up with events and activities to aid the growth of basketball coaches in Asia. He is also one of only three Expert Instructors handpicked by FIBA Asia to conceptualise and implement its basketball coaching clinic materials, and host coaching clinics (Level 1 to 3) in Asia. In addition, Dr Koh has been representing FIBA Asia on the World Association of Basketball Coaches (WABC) as an executive member since 2014, designing initiatives to develop basketball coaches across the globe.
Previously, Dr Koh was chosen to be one of only eight members – selected from more than 220 countries – of the FIBA Youth Commission. In 2013, he was invited to join the WABC meeting held at FIBA’s headquarters in Geneva, discussing global basketball programmes and development of coaches. He has also served at the Singapore Olympic Academy as Secretary General.
Dr Koh’s research areas of interest are in coaching and teaching in Physical Education (PE) and Sport, in particular, understanding and developing coaches and PE teachers to promote good practices. With the support of the likes of the BAS, Sport Singapore, and the Institute of Adult Learning, he has led and completed research projects on how basketball coaches learn and develop in Singapore. Dr Koh has also contributed to and been cited in publications on coaching, sports science and PE.
Dr Koh has previously held roles as a Head of Department (PE/Co-Curricular Activities), and an advisor and consultant for sports with the Ministry of Education’s Co-Curricular Activities Branch, Education Programmes Division. He also taught PE at the pre-university and secondary school level for a decade.
In March 2016, Dr Koh was appointed the President of the Singapore Physical Education Association. Presently, he is also the Vice President of the ASEAN Council for PE and Sport.
