For his outstanding quarter-century-long career in safeguarding the interests of Singaporeans, Commissioner Ng Joo Hee is bestowed the Nanyang Alumni Achievement Award.
Commissioner Ng has been with the Singapore Police Force (SPF) since 1985.
A Police scholar, the 44-year-old alumnus was appointed Commissioner of Police and took leadership of the SPF on 1 February 2010. Commissioner Ng was formerly Deputy Director of the Criminal Investigation Department and Director of the Police Intelligence Department, displaying his versatility in leading different departments.
Among his many achievements was the establishment of the Police S.T.A.R Unit – an elite hostage-rescue outfit. He subsequently went on to lead the outfit.
From 2001 to 2003, he successfully commanded the Central Police Division.
Beyond the SPF, he had served the Internal Security Department, Singapore Prison Service, as well as other government ministries and departments. He was appointed Director of Prisons in 2007 and was responsible for the efficient operation of all prisons and drug rehabilitation centres in Singapore.
Commissioner Ng obtained a Master in Business Administration (Accountancy) from NTU and a Master in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. In 1988, he obtained his honours degree in Engineering Science and Economics from the prestigious University of Oxford.
Commissioner Ng was absorbed into the Singapore Administrative Service in 1999, and had had stints in both the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
He currently sits on the board of the Casino Regulatory Authority, and is a member of the Probation Committee and the National Crime Prevention Council.
His commitment to preserving the safety of his fellow men extends beyond the shores of Singapore. In 1992, he spent a year working as a police monitor with the United Nations’ peacekeeping mission in Cambodia.
With his plethora of experience, the inspirational alumnus was a keynote speaker at NTU Convocation 2010, where he shared his passion and spirit with graduating students about to cross the threshold into the working world.
Commissioner Ng believes strongly in leading a healthy lifestyle. He participates in long distance running, marathons and triathlons. He too, enjoys a good game of golf and soccer.
