Nomination Guidelines   

1. Faculty & Staff

1.1 Nanyang Award for Research Excellence

Eligibility:

  • At least active in research in NTU for the past 3 years and only research work carried out while under the employment of the NTU will be considered.
  • Nominee should have been a Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-PI of research projects.
  • Nominee should have published his/her work in top tier international refereed journals and the work should be well cited by other researchers in the field.  The nominee should be recognised by the global academic community as having achieved significant breakthroughs or other outstanding accomplishments in the respective field.

Additional Eligibility for Team Nominations:

  • In cases of collaborative work, the Nobel Prize rule shall be followed, i.e. the nominated research team shall involve at most 3 team members, and the Prize will be shared equally.  The Research teams may comprise faculty, research staff and post-graduate students.
  • The team must work together for at least 3 years, and evidence of each member’s contribution must be clearly shown (i.e. the publication list must contain the names of all the team members).
  • There should be elements of multi-disciplinary research in the scope and output of the research performed.

Nomination Procedures:

  • Self-nomination is allowed, however, nomination by another party is preferred.
  • A recipient of Nanyang Award for Research Excellence is not eligible within the same category for a period of 3 years.  Any new nominations will be judged solely on research completed after the previous award.
  • Nominator should complete the nomination form and all nominations should stress the overall achievements of the nominee(s) and their significance.  The nomination shall include information on :
    • Description of research achievements
    • Publication track record
    • Impact of research output
    • Grants & awards/prizes received
  • Every division within the Schools and Research Institutes/Centres are encouraged to participate by nominating their best researchers in their respective division.

Evaluation Criteria:

The evaluation will be based on the quality and impact of research :

  • Scientific value of the research work. Particular consideration on whether the research advance scientific knowledge
  • Top tier publications, citations and external grants secured (as PI)
  • Whether the work of the candidate is appreciated by others: awards, prizes, editorial services to prestigious journals, reviewer services to funding agencies, etc.

The University Selection Committee will make the final selection of the award winner(s).

Prize:

  • $5,000 Cash
  • Trophy and Certificate of Commendation
  • Research Grant of $10,000 (to be used in the following year)

1.2 Nanyang Award for Innovation & Entrepreneurship

Eligibility:

  • The Award will be given to:
    • Nominee who has made significant contributions to the creation of a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem at NTU, and/or has provided the mentorship, counseling and encouragement to NTU students and faculty such that those individuals have chosen to step onto a career path of innovation and entrepreneurship that they would otherwise not have embarked upon; or
    • Nominee (individual or team) whose technology or innovation has successfully been commercialized and has made a significant economic impact and therefore contributed to creating a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem by being an example for others.
  • Nominee must have been in NTU for at least 3 years to qualify for the Award.

Nomination Procedures:

  • Self-nomination is allowed, however, nomination by another party is preferred.
  • A recipient of the Nanyang Award for Innovation and Entrepreneurship is not eligible to receive an award within the same category for a period of 3 years.
  • Nominator should complete the nomination form and all nominations should stress the overall achievements of the nominee(s) and their significance.  The nomination shall include information on:
    • Intellectual achievement, uniqueness and originality of the innovation
    • Degree of commercialization of the technology or innovation
    • Spin-off that has resulted from the technology or innovation
    • The contributions by the nominee to a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem in NTU

Evaluation Criteria:

The evaluation will be based on the contributions to innovation and entrepreneurship :

  • The impact of the contribution towards creating a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem.
  • The influence on students and faculty to embrace innovation and entrepreneurship.
  • The contribution to commercialisation of research and innovative technology that has an impact on Singapore and benefit to the public.

The University Selection Committee will make the final selection of the award winner(s).

Prize:

  • $5,000 Cash
  • Trophy and a Certificate of Commendation
  • Entrepreneurship Grant of $10,000 (to be used in the following year)

1.3 Nanyang Award for Service
1.4 Nanyang Award for Teamwork
1.5 Nanyang Award for Humanitarian Work

Eligibility:

  • All NTU faculty and staff who were in service at any time from 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011.
  • Individuals can be nominated for the Nanyang Award for Service and Nanyang Award for Humanitarian Work.
  • Teams can be nominated for any of these three Nanyang Awards.
  • For a nominated team, each team member should have contributed in a significant role.

Nomination Procedures:

  • Self-nomination is allowed, however, nomination by another party is preferred.
  • Nominator should complete the nomination form and all nominations should stress the overall achievements of the nominee(s) and their significance.  The nomination shall include information on :
    • Description of exemplary achievements, service and accomplishments over and above usual job responsibilities, and why they are significant
    • Impact on University’s vision and mission
    • How the reputation/international standing of NTU is enhanced
    • National, regional and/or international accolade and recognition
    • How the actions, attitude and personality of the nominee/s have inspired others
    • Additional Information Required For Service: How the nominee has gone above and beyond the expectations of the position, made a difference to the NTU community, and contributed to the success of other employees.
    • Additional Information Required For Teamwork Award: The esprit de corps of the team, and how the members have worked together in an exceptional manner to complete an assigned task
    • Additional Information Required For Humanitarian Work: Evidence of commitment to advance the welfare of the less privileged, how the contributions have affected the outcome of the situation (non-action would have produced definite consequences), the extreme danger / harsh conditions under which the humanitarian work is rendered and the exceptional courage in overcoming these obstacles 

Evaluation Criteria:

The evaluation will be based on the following key criteria :

  • Impact – for contributions or accomplishments, achieved either as an individual or as a team, which created significant positive impact to the image, competitive edge, growth of the University or achieved excellence beyond the immediate organizational level.
  • Influence – for contributions or accomplishments, achieved either as an individual or as a team, which have created a positive influence to the University’s community and beyond, inspiring fellow colleagues, students as well as the community at large.

The University Selection Committee will make the final selection of the award winner(s).

2.1 Nanyang Award for Teamwork
2.2 Nanyang Award for Humanitarian Work

Eligibility:

  • All students, full-time or part-time, in Academic Year 2010-11.
  • Individuals can be nominated for the Nanyang Award for Humanitarian Work.
  • Teams can be nominated for any of these two Nanyang Awards.
  • For a nominated team, each team member should have contributed in a significant role.

Nomination Procedures:

  • Self-nomination is allowed, however, nomination by another party is preferred.
    Nominator should complete the nomination form and all nominations should stress the overall achievements of the nominee(s) and their significance.  The nomination shall include information on :
    • Description of exemplary achievements, service and accomplishments over and above the usual activities, and why they are significant
    • Impact on University’s vision and mission
    • How the reputation/international standing of NTU is enhanced
    • National, regional and/or international accolade and recognition
    • How the actions, attitude and personality of the nominee/s have inspired others
    • Additional Information Required For Teamwork Award: The esprit de corps of the team, and how the members have worked together in an exceptional manner to complete an assigned task

3. Former Employees

3.1 Nanyang Award for Meritorious Achievement

Eligibility:

  • All former employees who have made significant and impactful contributions to the sustainable growth of the University.
  • Former employees who have been honoured, for the same contributions during their employment tenure, will not be doubly honoured.

Nomination Procedures:

  • Self-nomination is allowed, however, nomination by another party is preferred.
  • Nominator should complete the nomination form and all nominations should stress the overall achievements of the nominee(s) and their significance.  The nomination shall include information on:
    • Description of exemplary achievements, service and accomplishments over and above usual job responsibilities, and why they are significant
    • Impact on University’s vision and mission
    • How the reputation/international standing of NTU is enhanced
    • National, regional and/or international accolade and recognition
    • How the actions, attitude and personality of the nominee/s have inspired others

Evaluation Criteria:

The evaluation will be based on the following key criteria :

  • Impact – for contributions or accomplishments which created significant positive impact to the image, competitive edge, growth of the University or achieved excellence beyond the immediate organizational level.
  • Influence – for contributions or accomplishments which have created a positive influence to the University’s community and beyond, inspiring fellow colleagues, students as well as the community at large.
