INSTEP - Experience the World, Take the Leap

The International Student Exchange Program (INSTEP) challenges every undergraduate to take the leap and experience the world while pursuing the NTU degree.

INSTEP provides opportunities for you to develop global perspectives in your area of specialty. Choose among some 150 partner universities in more than 30 countries. How does INSTEP work?

  • Study overseas as an exchange student for either one or two semesters (see scheme 1 below). Students may also enroll as non-exchange/fee-paying/visiting international students (see scheme 2 below).
  • Earn Academic Units (AUs) towards your NTU degree. The subjects you take overseas will count towards your course of study when you return from the exchange program. Each applicant should consult their exchange coordinators about subject matching issues, including approval. Letter grades may not be transferred back to your course of study. 
  • In the spirit of exchange, international students should refrain from applying to an overseas university located in their home country.  
  • You will be classified as a non-graduating student at the overseas university. You are expected to return to your university to resume studies upon completion of the exchange program and cannot register for a degree at the overseas university which you have participated in the exchange program.
  • The period of candidature for your degree and for the award of honours will continue to apply.

Scheme 1 - Exchange or Fee-Waiver Scheme 

  • This is a reciprocal fee-waiver exchange arrangement with an overseas university. The exact number of exchange spots are negotiated for every academic year and is likely to vary after each exchange intake.

  • Students continue to pay their tuition fees to NTU during the period of their overseas exchange.
  • Students are not required to pay tuition fees to the overseas university.
  • Students are selected by NTU (see criteria under section 'Who Can Apply')  

Scheme 2 - Fee-paying/Study Abroad/Visiting International Student Scheme

  • The overseas university which you would like to go does not have an formal exchange agreement signed with NTU or has insufficient places under the exchange scheme 1.
  • If you are considering this scheme, please note that some universities may not take in such applications. Check if this is a feasible under prevailing admission guidelines of the relevant host university.  
  • Students will pay their tuition fees to the overseas university for the period of their overseas study.
  • Students are not required to pay tuition fees to NTU for the period of
    their overseas study.
  • Students may also opt for this scheme in their online INSTEP application.
  • Closing date for all Fee-paying applications is 31 March 2008. No late applications will be accepted.
