Programme Description

The Master of Arts in Contemporary China ( MACC) is a coursework-based programme at Nanyang Technological University.

The MACC programme aims to cultivate knowledge about the rapidly growing economic and political development of China and to generate analysis of its regional and global impact. The MACC is a coursework-based graduate-level programme specifically designed to enable students to understand China in greater depth and enhance their bicultural competence in the most effective way.

The growing economic and political power of China carries significant regional and global implications. Singapore and Southeast Asian nations need a wider pool of professionals – e.g. civil servants, officials, managers, teachers – who possess a strong working knowledge of China and an effective grasp of current China-related issues. The MACC programme is specially designed to serve the needs of mid-career professionals who are seeking an empirically-grounded and theoretically-informed understanding of the economic, political, social, and cultural development of contemporary China.

MACC programme aims to:

  • Develop a deeper interdisciplinary understanding of China and its people
  • Build up a pool of talent to support formulation and implementation of China strategies in various sectors

Graduates of the MACC programme will develop bicultural expertise on China and China-related matters. Such expertise will be useful in both the public and private sectors, including in business, government, media, education, and other professions in Singapore and beyond.

As an interdisciplinary programme, MACC will draw China specialists from various disciplines, including Business, Chinese, Economics, Public Administration, Psychology and Sociology at NTU as its faculty.

In collaboration with NTU's existing Master of Science in Managerial Economics and Master of Public Administration (MPA) programmes, in which more than a hundred Chinese government officials are enrolled annually, MACC provides a unique opportunity for students from both Singapore and China to establish extensive local and international networking.
