About Economics Awareness Exhibition 2009
This exhibit is part of a series of exhibits brought to you by the NTU Economics Society. Held in different places around the NTU campus, the Society’s inaugural exhibition focuses on alternative topics in economics, such as consumer behaviour, firm behaviour and game theory. For example, why would you find restaurants setting up close to each other, or how should we make a choice when we are confronted with a dilemma?
This exhibition seeks to educate and create awareness in economics through creative and innovative ways, which we believe will allow us to reach out to a wider audience within the NTU student body.
We invite you to view our exhibits and discover a whole new perspective in Economics.

While economics is generally perceived as technical and its close affiliation to finance, through this exhibition, we hope to change the common perception of economics and introduce topics that are relatively less popularised.
To conclude our exhibition, we will be setting up a booth on the 27th March at the South Spine, near Canteen B. We invite you to interact with us and drop your comments and areas for improvements. We look forward to meeting you.

Professor Luke Kang Kwong from the Division of Linguistics and Multilingual Studies wins Outstanding Researcher Award
Professor Luke Kang Kwong received an Outstanding Researcher Award at an Award Presentation Ceremony for Excellence in Teaching and Research held at the University of Hong Kong on February 19, 2009.
Professor Luke was given this prestigious award for his ground-breaking research in the field of Chinese Linguistics. For over twenty years he has researched into the Chinese language using innovative methods and techniques from a variety of disciplines, including Linguistics, Conversation Analysis, Corpus Linguistics, Natural Language Processing, and Cognitive Neuroscience.
He was the first to apply the methodology of Conversation Analysis to the study of Chinese using naturally occurring speech data. The major findings of this research were published in two books, Utterance-Final Particles in Cantonese Conversation and Telephone Calls: Unity and Diversity in the Structure of Telephone Conversations Across Languages and Cultures. On the basis of these speech data, he has constructed the Hong Kong University Cantonese Corpus, which has provided researchers with authentic data for in-depth investigations of the structure and functions of Cantonese. More recently he has researched into the interface between language structure and conversational turn-taking by focusing on the phenomenon of sentence completion. This line of research is being pursued in collaboration with scholars in Hong Kong, Canada and Germany.
Another area in which Professor Luke has done innovative work is the interaction between tone and intonation in Chinese. Using a combination of phonological and instrumental analysis, he has mapped out a solution to the longstanding problem of how tone and intonation work, now in collaboration and now in competition, in tone-rich languages.
Professor Luke has also worked together with computer engineers in the field of Natural Language Processing. This has resulted in the publication of a series of papers on word segmentation, parts-of-speech tagging, word sense disambiguation, new word recognition and abbreviation expansion in Chinese. He has also helped the IBM research lab in Beijing develop voice recognition applications for Cantonese, which has resulted in automatic phone-transaction systems now being widely used in Hong Kong.
In recent years Professor Luke has moved into yet another new inter-disciplinary research area, Language and Cognitive Neuroscience. In collaboration with scholars in this field and using latest neuroimaging techniques, he has published several influential articles on syntactic and semantic processing in Chinese and English, and the relationship between language and colour perception. |

Symposium on Sound, Silence and the Arts
Speaker: Steven Conner
The Centre for Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) and the English Division extend an open invitation to attend an interdisciplinary symposium on Sound, Silence and the Arts.
Whether it is listening to one’s reading voice, music, film or drama – auditory experience plays a central role in how we engage with art. This interdisciplinary symposium explores the ways in which sound and silence are formally manipulated and represented within film, music, literature and language. While vision has been the dominant mode for understanding truth and knowledge in modernity, this symposium seeks to examine an alternative narrative that reveals the cultural significance of auditory perception.
Keynote Speaker
Steven Connor is a Professor of Modern Literature and Theory at Birkbeck College London, where he has taught since 1979. He is also the College Orator. He is Academic Director of the London Consortium Graduate Programme in Humanities and Cultural Studies. His most recent books are The Book of Skin (London: Reaktion, 2004) and Fly, on the history of the fly in poetry, painting, religion and science (London: Reaktion 2006).

CLASS Seminar Series - "Tracking Opportunities and Problems (TOPP) study - a longitudinal study from 18 months to 18 years" by Wendy Nilsen, Norwegian Institute of National Health, Oslo, Norway
Abstract:
Longitudinal, prospective population studies offer a unique opportunity to study precursors and developmental courses of positive and negative outcomes in childhood and adolescence. Worldwide, there are a limited number of longitudinal studies that deal with risk and protective factors for child and adolescent mental health, and even fewer that span the period from infancy to adolescence. Throughout the entire developmental period, there is an opportunity to change the paths. The longer the developmental span we study, greater is the variety of developmental and social processes that may be focused upon along the way, and greater also is the possibility to identify risk and protective factors. The TOPP study - follows children from 18 months to 18 years, with 8 waves of data collection. Some of the factors the study measures are family adversity, maternal, paternal and the children's mental and somatic health and personality, in addition to positive factors such as social support. The study aims to increase our knowledge about precursors, early predictors and developmental pathways to symptoms of depression among adolescent boys and girls. Thus, this is crucial information needed to indicate where and when preventive measures and intervention should be implemented.
The aim of my PhD-thesis within the TOPP-study is to examine the continuity of depression symptoms in children and their mothers from toddlerhood to adolescence. The 921 families and children participating in the TOPP-study were measured on internalizing symptoms when they were 18 months, 2.5, 4.5, 8.5, 12.5, 14.5 and 16.5 years old. Their mothers were measured on Hopkins Symptom Check List (HSCL) at the same seven data waves. The scores on depression symptoms from toddlerhood to adolescence showed moderate stability, with an increasing amount of stability from age 12.5 and onwards.
This talk will be consisting of a presentation of the TOPP-study and some of its findings - as well as an introduction to my doctoral thesis work and some of its preliminary findings.
Biography:
Wendy Nilsen has a Msc in Social Psychology, and is currently working as a PhD-researcher/scholar at the Division of Mental Health at the Norwegian Institute of National Health, Oslo, Norway. In September 2008 she started working with her PhD-thesis about depression in adolescence, and precursors and developmental pathways from 18 months to 18 years. The thesis is a part of the research project "Tracking Opportunities and Problems (TOPP) - study" - a longitudinal study starting in 1993 and lasting until 2010.

Time Magazine’s Top 10 Animal Stories of 2008
In December 2007, Dr. Gumert published a paper in the journal Animal Behaviour, entitled “Payment for sex in a macaque mating market.” The paper demonstrated the value of using an economic model of supply and demand for explaining cooperative behavior in animals that involves the voluntary choice of a partner in a competitive social market. The research was a test of a theory originated by Ronald Noe and Peter Hammerstein in the mid-90’s, called biological market theory. This was the first paper applying the model to exchanges with sexual behavior, and following its publication it was popularized by New Scientist, Discovery Channel News, Time, and the Associated Press. Following its initial press release, the article was seen in various forms in numerous newspapers and websites around the globe, further leading to an interview for another article in the NY Times on animal mating systems and an interview with the Strait’s Times on Dr. Gumert’s work with macaque monkeys in SE Asia. In January 2009, the story was listed as #8 on Time magazine’s Top 10 Animal Stories of 2008.

Director of Language Administration at China's Ministry of Education wrote a preface to Dr Goh’s book
Prof Li Yuming, Director of Language Administration at China's Ministry of Education wrote a preface to Dr Goh’s book, just published in Beijing. It is the first time ever that the most senior official in charge of China's language planning and language standardisation has done so for an overseas scholar. In it, Prof Li highly commended Dr Goh's scholarly effort and achievement. He praises Singapore Government's language policy and says that understanding the Republic's language policy is critical in formulating China's own language policy. He also proposes development of a "Da Huayu" (Global Huayu) as a common language for Chinese worldwide in light of increasing influence of China globally. |
