Relevance

Singapore Government, Public and Private Sectors, Business and Corporations are dedicated to the wellbeing of the overall welfare of the people and the development of the economy. Over the years much has been achieved, but since the Asian Economic crisis, the outbreak of SARS has had a significant impact on Singapore's economic growth matrix irrespective of its past trend and momentum. Additionally, the expansion and transformation of information technology, global integration and competition have also affected Singapore's economic structure. For the implementation of existing policy and the formulation of future policy on socio-economic transformation, reengineering, restructuring and reforming, the planning and development process should be information-based. For the Singapore economy, identifying the key macro variables of the growth matrix and their modeling, estimations and forecasts continuously with greater precision are of utmost important and relevance.

Scope

Nanyang Technological University has a history of Singapore economic forecasting with greater accuracy and precision. In order to keep up the past momentum into the future, the EMU of the Economic Growth Centre (EGC) will routinely make regular forecasts of the Singapore Economy and the regions.

The domestic economy is interdependent with regional and international economic behavior. Keeping this in mind, the scope of the unit is also to cater to the wider modeling needs not only for Singapore but also for the ASEAN countries. For wider capacity building and research collaborations of the group members, net workings with the international related organizations are also included within the scope of the unit.
