Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Economics
Economics is a social science that deals with the creation, distribution and consumption of wealth. Because it is about people and the real world, Economics enables students to learn about banking, finance, globalization, and also about broader social issues such as poverty, education, health and the environment. It is a versatile discipline with close links to politics, sociology, psychology, business and finance.
The appeal of Economics lies especially in its application of theory and quantitative methods to contemporary economic problems. It helps students to think logically, rationally and rigorously. Graduates in Economics as such acquire problem-solving skills that prepare them for a wide range of careers both in the public and private sectors.
The undergraduate Economics programme at NTU is distinguished by its emphasis on applications and policy. The curriculum offers a solid training in economic theory and statistical methods and offers a wide choice of Economics courses to suit students' interests and mathematical aptitude. Economics electives cover all the significant fields of economic knowledge as well as recent developments in areas such as Internet Economics and Behavioural Economics. Students may select one of 3 areas of concentration: Development and Public Policy; Finance and Business; or Quantitative Economics.
At the same time NTU offers the benefit of a broad-based undergraduate education. We recognize the importance of choice and the option to take a multi-disciplinary combination. Our curriculum is flexible so that our students have the opportunity to add value to an already marketable degree by graduating with another Minor. NTU offers an unrivaled choice of Minors that includes Psychology, Sociology, Chinese, Business, Communication Studies, Education, Entrepreneurship, among many others.
At NTU, our Economics majors will also have the opportunity to pursue a Double Major programme. Qualified students may take a second major in another discipline offered within SHSS (Psychology, Sociology, English or Chinese); a second major in Business offered by the Nanyang Business School; or a second major in Communication Studies offered by the School of Communications and Information.
Students can also opt for the integrated degree, BSc (Hons) in Mathematics and Economics, which is rather popular. This new integrated degree, aimed at students with strong quantitative aptitude and keen interest in economics, is jointly offered by the Division of Mathematical Sciences in the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and the Department of Economics in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
