1.   The Curriculum
To graduate, students must complete 2 categories of requirement, totaling at least 145 Academic Units (Aus):

  • Major Requirements (91 AUs)
  • General Education Requirements (GER) (54 AUs)

(a) Major Requirements (91 AUs)

The major requirements for a Chinese Major are:

i. Chinese Major Core (38 AUs)
ii. 
Chinese Prescribed Electives (45 AUs)

Students are expected to choose 12 courses from the Prescribed Electives (note: pre-requisite is required for some courses). While students are free to select any courses from any of the five categories, they are advised to make a more organized selection from one or two categories of specialization. In general, Category A will serve as the core from which students are advised to choose at least four courses. For the remaining courses, students are advised to choose at least four from any of the categories. Out of the 12 courses, students are also required to choose at least two courses at 100 and/or 200 levels, and at least two courses at 300 and 400 levels respectively.

iii. Graduation Project (8 AUs)

(b)   General Education Requirements

All HSS students will be required to complete 7 courses as part of the General Education Requirements. 2 courses from the GER core:

i.  GER – Core (6 Aus)

Plus 5 courses from a list of GER prescribed electives in the following 3 areas:

ii.   GER – Prescribed Electives (PEs) (15 AUs)

  • Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS) (3 AUs)
  • Science & Technology (STS) (9 AUs)
  • Business & management (BM) (3 AUs)

 iii.  GER – Unrestricted Electives (33 AUs)

Students may fulfil the remaining 33 AUs from any School. They may make use of the unrestricted electives to fulfil the requirements for a second Major, one or two Minor(s), or read more courses from Chinese.

Students doing the Chinese Major programme are strongly encouraged to take up a Minor programme. The Division of Chinese offers a specialized Minor programme, which is the Minor in Translation. Students majoring in Chinese are especially encouraged to take up this Minor programme. They will be recognized as successfully completing a Major in Chinese and a Minor in Translation although the two programmes are offered by the same Division.

Duration

The curriculum is designed as a four -year course. Well-prepared students can complete the degree in a shorter period by taking more courses during the semester and/or attending special sessions.

Admission Requirements

Students majoring in Chinese will be admitted directly into the BA (Hons) in Chinese programme. In addition to the general admission requirements set by NTU, students need at least (1) a good pass in GCE O-level Chinese or Higher Chinese, or (2) a pass in GCE A-level Chinese or Higher Chinese, or (3) an equivalent.

Career Opportunities

Our Chinese Major programme exposes you to a wide range of knowledge and methodology, which gives you more options when you are looking for a job. You will be well equipped to take up traditional professions such as education and journalism. In addition, you are also capable to start a career as a translator, administrator, diplomat, entrepreneur, etc. With the knowledge of Chinese language and China matters, as well as bilingual ability, you will be the best person to provide professional consultation to government bodies and private companies that are interested in venturing into the China market.
