1. Introduction

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences started to offer the double major programme from academic year 2005/6 to students enrolled in HSS. Students may take up another HSS degree programme or Communication Studies as a second major.  The objective of the programme is to provide HSS students with the opportunity to graduate with an additional major in the humanities or social sciences within the duration of their 4-year programme.

2. Admission

  1. Qualified students registered under HSS will be given the option to work on a second major from the first year. The same admission criteria (such as the U-score and special requirements of the relevant Division) for the first major will be applied to the second major. The student may receive more than one offer and will be asked to declare their second major at the time of acceptance of the offer.

  2. Students not on the double major track in the first year may be considered for a double major from the second year if they perform well in their first year in NTU.

3. Curriculum requirements

  1. The contents of the curriculum for Division of Chinese are presented in Appendix A.

  2. In fulfilling the AU requirements for the second major, the following may be applied:

    (i) Students may be waived from equivalent courses offered in the students' first Major, and the AUs counted, subject to the approval of the Divisions concerned.

(ii) Students have the option to take a Graduation Thesis in the second Major, in lieu of one course (4 AUs), provided the Thesis is undertaken as an interdisciplinary project in conjunction with that required in the students' first Major.

4. Award of Double Major

  1. Students will graduate with a B.A. degree in their first major. The second major will not be reflected in the degree scroll itself but it will be shown on the final transcript.
