Seminar Abstract

Sound glosses refer to those phonological annotations on earlier scriptures.  It is one of the most important materials used to study ancient Chinese phonology. However, due to reasons such as transcription errors, the usage of these materials has to be taken with special care, plus an extra effort in collating from different sources. The achievements made by Eastern Han commentators are remarkable, and Gao You, being one of the most important figures among them, gained much applause for his annotations on scriptures like Huai-Nan-Zi, Lv-Shi-Chun-Qiu and Zhan-Guo-Ce. In this seminar, we will examine the sound glosses in Gao You's commentary notes on Huai-Nan-Zi, by first discriminating the nature of the materials, and thereafter a thorough phonological analysis by a comparison with the sound structure of Qie-Yun.
