English Literature

What are the readings and writing assignments like?

Students usually write one or two essays for each module over the course of a semester, and are encouraged to meet with their professors to discuss their essay ideas. The goal of each writing assignment is to allow students to practice the art of textual analysis, and to learn how to make provocative arguments of their own design.  The quantity and variety of texts varies for each class. For instance, in The Survey of English Literature II, students read a mixture of poetry and short prose pieces for each class. In Victorian Literature and Culture, students read three novels, a short play, a short story and some poetry, along with a film adaptation and an overview of paintings from the period.

Will adding a minor in English Literature complement a degree in (Sociology, Psychology, Business, etc)?

A minor in English Literature will enhance any other degree in The School of Humanities and Social Science, as well as every degree outside of our school (it is a very common minor for those studying in the Business School). The practice of reading and writing, as well as individual guidance from faculty, will help you to hone your analytical and communication skills. The study of literature broadens your horizons, offers insights into human psychology, and sharpens your language skills, all of which are essential qualities in any field of research you plan on pursuing.

If I attended a Polytechnic rather than to a JC, will I have difficulty with the coursework?

We have accepted numerous students from Polytechnics, some of whom are among our best students.  Our first year compulsory subjects are all introductory in nature, and are designed specifically to prepare all students for the more advance subjects of their later years.
