Mr Lim Chuan Poh has been Chairman of A*STAR since April 2007, and chairs the National Infocomm Security Committee from September 2010. He also chairs the Pro-Tem Governing Board of the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, a joint medical school by Imperial College London and NTU, to oversee the setting up of the school until the Governing Board is established.
He serves on the boards of NTU and the National Research Foundation. He is a Council Member of the Science and Technology in Society Forum and a Member of Japan’s World Premier International Initiative Program Assessment and Review Committee.
Mr Lim was the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education (MOE) prior to helming A*STAR. He oversaw the transformation of the publicly-funded universities into Autonomous Universities and reviewed the university research framework that led to the creation of the Academic Research Council and a new Academic Research Funding Framework. Before joining MOE, he spent 23 years with the Singapore Armed Forces and last held the office of Chief of Defence Force.
Among the awards he has received are the Public Administration Medal, Gold (Military) and the Meritorious Service Medal (Military). He has also received the Legion of Merit (Degree of Commander) (USA) twice. He was conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science by Loughborough University, the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws by Monash University, and the Fellowship of Imperial College London.
Mr Lim has a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Mathematics and a Master of Arts from Cambridge University. He has a Masters in Business Administration (with distinction) from Cornell University and attended the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School. He is a graduate of Camberley Staff College.
