Frequently Asked Questions

Why does NTU need a new logo, and style guidelines?

All communication materials from NTU - correspondence, brochures, reports, magazines, books, websites, slide shows, exhibits, event invitations, posters, forms and applications, apparel, gift items, and other memorabilia - represent the university. The logo and style guidelines help project a strong and consistent Nanyang brand.

What is my part in the use of the university identity?

Communication materials come from all departments, schools, research centres / institutes, providing information about the university and its programmes.

Aside from the content of the materials, there are other elements which influence the perception of the university, including the clarity, tone, style, and professionalism with which the information is presented. As a result of how the information is perceived, each communication can strengthen or weaken NTU's public image. It is everyone's responsibility to upkeep and strengthen the Nanyang brand.

Do other universities use style guidelines?

Yes, and so do many companies and organizations around the world. NTU's new logo and the university identity guidelines will help project a strong Nanyang brand and convey messages in a clear and consistent manner.

How does the ordering / production process for corporate stationery works?

Please refer to the approval workflow for printing of corporate stationery.

Can I change the format of the business card layout? Can I have my own font style? Can I print my centre / institute logos in the business cards?

The business card layout as reflected is the official layout be used by all NTU staff and faculty for their business cards.  The use of unofficial fonts and inclusion of logos other than the university's results in an inconsistent look which dilutes the Nanyang brand.

Do I need to include a photograph, or reflect educational qualifications on my business card?

These are all optional items and can be included if you wish to. Note that portraits should preferably be taken against a light-coloured background.

Are there specific printers to approach for printing of business cards / letterheads / envelopes?

Please approach the Office of Finance for more details on this. The use of appointed printers is an official procedure stated by Finance.

How many permutations of business cards are there?

The business card can be printed in one or two languages. When exercising the option of printing in two languages, it will be one language on each side. The 'front' of the business card will bear the NTU logo, and will be in colour. The reverse side will carry only details printed in black, and will not carry the logo.

Can I have other languages (other than English and Chinese) on my business card?

Currently, English and Chinese are the languages available.

Can I have my salutation title printed before my name on the business card?

For those who wish to, you can include (Mrs) / (Ms) / (Mdm) / (Mr) after the name. The inclusion of PhD, or Ph.D. in the qualifications liner allocated would already indicate that the person is a doctorate holder.

Can I include my own "personal" website URL or email address on the business card? Can I list my centre's / institute's website URL on the business card?

For consistency and branding, the preferred website address to be listed is "www.ntu.edu.sg". Official "personal" website addresses under NTU domain can be listed and that usually comes in the format of www.ntu.edu.sg/home/<NAME>. Do note that only NTU email addresses will be included on the business card. Your centre/ institute's website URL can also be listed.

Can I list multiple designations on the business card?

There is limited space on a business card. Please send all the information to the printers (as appointed by the Office of Finance) and Corporate Communications will check if all information can fit. Users may choose to print different business cards representing their various capacities.

Can I have multiple telephone / fax numbers on the business card?

Generally, one would list:

  • a general office mainline number
  • a direct number
  • a fax number

Listing any more than four numbers would be information overload on a small piece of communication such as the business card.
